PHRASE & CLAUSE

Phrase and clause are group of related verbs that serve of building block of sentence of a larger scale than parts of speech.

So, what are the differences between phrase and clause? Let's take a look at their definition and examples.

- A phrase is a group of words that acts as a particular part of speech or part of a sentence but doesn't have a verb and its subject. There are many types of phrase :

1. Noun phrase : name of person, thing or idea
example - my old English (teacher) was American.

2. Verb phrase : express action or state of being
example - He is eating Domino pizza.

3. Prepositional phrase : adjective or adverb in a sentence
example - he is lying in the bed

4. Adjective phrase : modify a noun or pronoun
example -  the girl with red hair is my sister.

5. Adverb phrase : function as adverb in a sentence
example - he returned in a short while.

- Clause is used as a particular part of speech or part of a sentence ; however, unlike phrase, a clause has a verb and its subject.

  • Clause can be divided into ------> independent clause
                                                   ------> subordinate clause ( dependent clause )

Independent clause
# a group of work that has a verb and its subject.
# can stand alone as a sentence.
#example : the white index card ( subject ) fell ( verb ) to the floor.

Subordinate clause (dependent clause )
~ has a verb and subject but can't stand alone as a sentence.
~ example : He had just alphabetized the cards when they fell on the floor and scattered everything.
